Pench National Park is among the most famous wildlife attractions in India due to its high biodiversity and thrilling safaris. Every safari into its teak forest, open savannahs, and river banks provides visitors with an opportunity to see some of the most stunning wildlife that India can offer. Even though there are numerous species in Pench, a few of them are considered to be symbols of the park. It is thanks to these animals that Pench represents the beauty of the park and is a sight every wildlife lover wishes to spot.
At Mayur The Karma Resort, we’ve welcomed countless guests embarking on Pench safaris over the years. Based on these experiences, we’ve put together The Iconic 5 of Pench, the five extraordinary animals that truly define the magic of this incredible national park.
No Pench safari is complete without the hope and the thrill of spotting a Royal Bengal Tiger.
Pench National Park is one of the top tiger reserves in India, part of Project Tiger since 1992. The park’s diverse terrain of teak forests, open meadows, and the flowing Pench River creates the perfect habitat for these majestic predators. Tigers are most active during the early morning and late afternoon hours, which is exactly when safaris are conducted. The dry months in summer until seasonal rainfall becomes a routine are particularly rewarding, as tigers frequent waterholes and riverbanks in search of water and prey. The best spots near Nagpur are near Turia and Khawasa gate, and around the Pench River banks. Pench is said to be the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. The tiger Shere Khan was born from the legend of these very forests.
As the king is the tiger, the leopard is the shadow. The leopard is such an enigmatic, athletic, beautiful animal that it always blends in with its surroundings and is usually seen perched on branches of trees or camouflaged in tall grass, thus adding an element of surprise. The leopard is nocturnal by nature, but may be seen during the early mornings and evenings. It is found near the edges of the forest and rocky areas. Seeing a leopard needs a lot of patience, good eyesight, and the company of a good naturalist. Best spots for sighting a leopard include rocky hill sides, canopy trees and forest fringes. One interesting fact about these creatures is it can drag a kill weighing more than their body weight into trees.
The Sloth Bear is one of Pench National Park’s most intriguing and rewarding wildlife sightings. Mostly active during the early morning, late evening, and night, these fascinating animals spend much of their time searching for termites, ants, honey, fruits, and berries. Watching a Sloth Bear amble through the forest or dig into a termite mound with surprising speed is a sight that every safari enthusiast hopes to witness. Although generally shy, Sloth Bears can be unpredictable when threatened, making it important to admire them from a safe distance. Pench’s dry deciduous forests, rocky hills, and bamboo thickets provide an ideal habitat for these unique mammals. Spotting a Sloth Bear on safari is considered a special moment because they are less frequently seen than deer or gaur, yet their presence adds an unforgettable thrill to the jungle experience. For wildlife photographers and nature lovers alike, a Sloth Bear sighting is a true highlight of any Pench safari.
The Marsh Crocodile, popularly known as the Mugger, is one of the oldest and most fascinating residents of Pench National Park. Muggers are masters of camouflage, blending effortlessly into their watery surroundings as they wait for the perfect moment to strike. During the warmer months, they are frequently spotted sunbathing on riverbanks or near reservoirs, making them one of the easier iconic species to observe on a safari. A sighting of the Mugger adds a completely different dimension to the safari experience. While tigers and leopards rule the forests, the rivers and wetlands belong to this ancient guardian, making it a deserving member of The Iconic 5 of Pench.
Often overshadowed by the tiger and leopard, the Dhole, or Indian Wild Dog, is one of Pench National Park’s most fascinating predators. Known for its rusty-red coat, alert ears, and exceptional teamwork, the dhole hunts in highly organised packs, making it one of the most efficient hunters in the wild. Watching a pack of dholes move silently through the forest or coordinate a hunt is an experience that few wildlife destinations can offer. Pench National Park is recognised as one of the best places in India to spot these remarkable animals. Unlike solitary big cats, dholes rely on communication, cooperation, and endurance to survive, making them a favourite among wildlife photographers and naturalists. Their playful behaviour, strong social bonds, and incredible hunting strategies make every sighting exciting and unforgettable. While they may not enjoy the fame of tigers, encountering a pack of dholes in Pench is considered one of the park’s most rewarding wildlife experiences.
For the best Pench Safari experience, you must begin early; the first safari of the day, between 6:00 am and 10:00 am, provides maximum wildlife activity coupled with the most spectacular light. While in the jungle, keep yourself silent since it will disturb the wildlife otherwise. The naturalists at Mayur The Karma have ample expertise in deciphering all the signs of the jungle, such as calls, footprints, and broken branches; every little sign tells a story of the wild. Another aspect of Pench Safari which should not be overlooked is the patience factor, since some of the most memorable wildlife encounters happen when one patiently stands silent. If you want to enjoy the most out of your safari trip, consider visiting us from October to June and particularly March to May, since this period is rewarding due to the thinning forests and water sources.
Our guests at Mayur The Karma Resort do not just get accommodations; rather, they receive the opportunity to explore the wilderness. Being situated close to Khawasa Gate of Pench National Park, Mayur The Karma Resort offers you safaris led by our naturalists who have vast knowledge of the region and will organise a safari as per your requirements.
